We had our log home built out here in Treaster Valley fifteen
years ago. Our original plans did not provide an indoor cellar
way to the basement. Only about one fourth of the basement was
walled and finished to provide room for our pump pressure tank,
the water heater, and the electrical entrance breaker box. Later
we added a small freezer and shelves for canning supplies and
preserved fruit and vegetables. Our only access to the basement
was through the Bilco door at the east end of the house. In
spite of the inconvenience, we were able to function quite well
with this arrangement. In more recent years, as severe storm
warnings seem to have become more frequent, we realized that we
did not have a good plan for our safety in the case of such a
storm. The radio and television storm warnings always recommend
that we retreat to a protected area, such as a basement room.
This, of course in our case, would mean going outside into the
storm and around the house to find the security of our basement
room. We did this several times.
This winter we decided to rectify our past error and build an
inside stairway to the cellar. The only place that the stairs
could be built was through the floor of our broom closet which
was under the stairs that lead to the loft. We secured the
muscles and talent of three of our Amish neighbors, Esle,
Daniel, and Amos Hostetler. They are amazing workers, and
completed the project in just four days. They had to dig and
carry out about twenty five cubic yards of dirt. Then they had
to mix and pour approximately seventy-five square feet of
concrete for the floor. The stairway itself was built in two
sections with a landing near the bottom. There were no
blueprints or printed plans, nor complicated calculations on
paper. The only tools that they employed were picks and shovels,
a retractable rule, a framer's square, and saws and hammers.
About all that I could do was to provide transportation, and try
to keep out of their way.
So the first severe thunderstorm of the summer will probably
find Carol and myself, our dogs, Jeb and Maggie, two cats, (and
a coffee pot) all safe and secure. It would be well if all of
life's problems could be so easily solved.
Life does present us with many threatening storms, be they
physical, financial or emotional. It is our innate desire to
find a place of peace and security. May I suggest that such a
place may be found within the caring embrace of our friends and
in the compassionate understanding of the congregation of our
church. Surely the greatest help we can have is offered by the
one who was himself a carpenter- even Jesus.
"And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat
into the boat. But Jesus was asleep. They awoke him and
said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care if we perish?’
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea,
‘Peace! Be still.’ And the wind ceased, and there was a
great calm." Mark 4: 37-39

IAN SHELLY
(edited from original
hard copy version of Panorama)
Ian Shelly is the newest member of the Lewistown Presbyterian
Church. He finished confirmation classes with Pastor Bill King
in time to be confirmed on Palm Sunday.
The Shelly family is very active in the life our church.
Ian participates in Presby Youth and attends Sunday School.
At the Easter sunrise service he portrayed a security officer in
Biblical style in the dramatic presentation, "CSI: Jerusalem."
Ian also is one of our newest ding-a-lings, playing in the
recently reorganized bell choir.
He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 4, which is sponsored by
our church. Ian is a Tenderfoot at the moment but has met the
requirements to be promoted in rank to Second Class at a Court
of Honor this spring. His ultimate goal? Eagle Scout!
Ian attends SMMS, and plays soccer and basketball too.
By the way, if you’re ever thinking about giving Ian a gift
for all his efforts, he would gladly accept a Pepsi! |

A Musical Comedy "Hold That Thought"
A woman of a certain age decides to try dating again after, oh, say 25 years.
Unfortunately, planning three dates on one evening is not the best idea; you
see, middle-aged men simply can't keep to a schedule unless they've had a nap
first! With the help of her friend, she puts each of her men on hold and runs to
the next. You'll think of Lucy and Ethel, as you watch them juggle their
problems, and by the end, they'll have a lot of 'splaining to do! Lots of
frantic fun and loads of laughter

WATER BALLOONS, SQUIRT GUNS, and
PLENTY OF WATER |
|
New this summer will be the Squirt and
Splash Field for campers of all ages. Imagine a hot day
with spring-water-filled balloons and launchers and lots
of room in which to get wet and have fun. Another good
reason to sign up your child, grandchild, or neighbor
for a week of spiritual growth, friendships, and fun.
GOODBYE TEPEES / HELLO NAVAJO
HOGANS |
|
Have you slept in a tepee during a
rainstorm? That is why we’re replacing them with
waterproof-covered log hogans this summer. Campouts for
3rd-6th graders will now be available regardless of
weather on top of the Krislund Mountain. Nearby
restrooms and a perfect star gazing landing make this a
time to talk and reflect on God’s amazing creativity and
blessings.
COUNSELOR WATCH |
|
Krislund is on the lookout for loving
summer counselor candidates and lifeguard(s). Asst.
counselors must be 16 years of age and senior counselors
may be 18 or older. Paid positions are available for
persons willing to give all or part of their summer to
serving Christ and loving campers. Go to
www.krislund.org to download an application or call
814.422.8878.
MAY EVENTS: WORK DAY and OPEN HOUSE
|
|
The semiannual WORKDAY will soon be
here: Saturday, May 3, 8:30-4:00. Families and
individuals are needed to help us get ready for the
summer by painting putting up wagon and tent canvas,
cleaning, hauling, and organizing. The more the merrier.
Spring OPEN HOUSE will be on Saturday, May 17, from
1-6:00 p.m.. Wagon rides, basketball, kite flying, wall
climbing, tours, summer registration booth, and an
outdoor picnic are some of the fun. Contact the office
for more information or to register your attendance at
either or both events.
FOR CHURCH STAFF and SPOUSES ONLY |

and get back to the basics on a BEGINNER BACKPACK TRIP,
April 23-25. No experience and minimum equipment is
