As
I begin serving as your interim pastor, I want to thank you for
such a warm welcome. It was a special treat for me to have my
wife and children with me on my first Sunday, September 2. We
appreciated the reception following the worship service.
I am looking forward to my time with you as we prepare the
way for calling a new pastor. I have been involved in
intentional interim ministry for over a decade. I live in
Cowansville, PA, and will be staying in the manse several nights
a week while serving as your interim pastor.
Before coming to the Lewistown Church, I served as the
interim pastor at Trinity Church, Butler. Prior to that, I was
the interim pastor at Bell Memorial Church in Ellwood City. I
have also served as the interim associate pastor for Graystone
Church, Indiana, and the interim pastor for First Church,
Clarion. While serving as the interim pastor for the yoke of
Mount Zion Church, Templeton, and Concord Church, Dayton, I
attended the interim pastor training program sponsored by the
Presbyterian Church at Montreat in North Carolina.
My wife, Mary, and I live in Cowansville where she has been
the pastor of Union First Presbyterian Church since 1979. Our
son, Tim, is a graduate of Penn State and is working as a
mechanical engineer for Westinghouse in the Pittsburgh area. His
wife, Emily, teaches music in the Leechburg School District. Our
daughter, Gloria, is a junior at Penn State majoring in
mechanical engineering and a member of the Blue Band.
I have been active in my community in a number of ways. I
managed several of my daughter’s little league teams (minor
league baseball and senior girl’s softball) and spent a year
umpiring. I have served as president of the local P.T.O. and as
a board member for the Armstrong County chapter of the Red
Cross.
A graduate of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, I pursued
post-graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh. My
undergraduate degree is in electrical engineering from Bucknell
University. After college, I worked for a while at a government
research lab near Washington, D.C. On a personal note, I have a
passion for music, computers, and astronomy.

The Harrop Family recently hosted a pig roast and
covered dish picnic for all their friends and neighbors
out here in the Siglerville area. Carol and I were
invited, but due to an error in timing we were not able
to enjoy the food and fellowship it offered. We wish it
had been possible for us to attend because it may have
brought to closure an event which happened earlier this
summer at our home over here in Treaster Valley. It went
something like this:
I had gathered a wheelbarrow full of red beets for
pickling when Maggie, our little dog, decided that it
was time for her morning walk. As we started up the
road, we came upon an unusual sight. There was a pretty
white pig lumbering up the road ahead of us. Both of us
knew that the pig belonged in the pasture field, not in
the road where motor vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians
often travel. We slipped by the sow on the other side of
the road and proceeded to chase her back down to our
Amish neighbor's barnyard where she belonged. But when
she reached our driveway she turned up into our lot. The
obviously hungry pig grabbed an apple from our tree and
continued to an area behind our house. She was not able
to find her way back into the pasture so the confused
creature came back down through our garden, flattening
tomatoes, beans, melons and corn on the way. She turned
up the road again and turned into the first lane she
found, hoping that it might lead her home. I walked down
to the Amish house and told Barbara where I had last
seen her pig.
Carol and I returned to our beet crop. Shortly
thereafter Barbara came into our yard pulling a coaster
wagon with her two children, twenty month old Andrew,
and four month old Melinda aboard. She asked Carol to
watch the children while she went to chase her precious
sow home. Soon she yelled that the pig was headed for
her home and that I should stand in our driveway to
prevent her from entering our lot again. It almost
worked, but the determined sow just went to the next
driveway and ran behind our house again. Barbara and I
cornered her where there was a gap in the fence. But the
pig had other ideas, and headed back to the road with
Barbara in hot, barefooted pursuit.
By this time, little Andrew realized that Carol did
not look like his Amish mother and began to cry loudly
and wiggled himself out of the wagon. Carol saw the
danger of the rampaging pig and tried to find a
sheltered area for the kids and herself. But little
Andrew would not be placed back in the wagon. Barbara
continued to chase after her stupid pig. Because Andrew
was more familiar with me than Carol, we managed to calm
him down a bit. Barbara came back announcing that the
miserable pig had found another gap in the fence and was
now safely back in the field... Barbara, Andrew, and
Melinda went happily home. Carol and I went back to
pickle beets. The next day the pig went to the
Belleville market.
I have learned two things about that day. First, we
should always try to help our neighbors, even if we do
not know what we are doing. The second lesson is that
pigs are smarter than people which indicates that God
has a wonderful sense of humor.

Faith
came into my room one night
And all the other guests took flight.
Fear, anxiety, grief and gloom
sped out into the night.
I wondered that such peace could be.
But faith said gently, “Don’t you see?
They simply cannot live with me.”

Dear Friend,
This is to acknowledge your recent contribution
of $546.00 from:
Lewistown Presbyterian Church
In the 2007 canning project on February 12 – 15 we
successfully canned all the purchased meat, with
dedicated volunteers, in spite of the inclement weather.
We are now looking forward to the 2008 canning project
next year with your donation.
Besides the major amount of canned meat that is
channeled through the Mennonite Central Committee which
can go worldwide, our donations have also helped in
national relief efforts, such as after the hurricanes in
the southern states. Meat and broth distribution from
the canning go to Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, soup
kitchens, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, etc, in our area
including counties such as, Mifflin, Juniata, Centre,
Huntingdon, and Blair.
Thank you for your contribution. It is greatly
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Andrew B. Martin

Dear Christian Friends:
On behalf of the LUMINA Center board and staff, I
would like to express sincere thanks to all for allowing
us once again to utilize the classrooms and the
sanctuary of your church during Rainbow Summer this
year. As you may or may not know, this year was the
largest Rainbow Summer the LUMINA Center has ever seen.
Our attendance ranged from a low of 106 to a high of 128
children per day. The fact that we were able to use the
classrooms that we did helped us tremendously—especially
since they're air-conditioned and spacious. Thank you
for the use of the sanctuary for the special programs as
well. We truly appreciate your kindness to us. A special
thanks to Arlene for being so accommodating and kind to
all of us.
In addition, I would like to express gratitude to you
for all the snacks you have given us over the past
months. We certainly use them for the kids and
especially for the power packs we give the children in
after-school. Thank you for your generosity and kindness
to us.
Our fall activities will begin with Kids Cafe
After-School activity on September 24 and Drop-In on
September 28. The SONshine Club will continue as a year
round activity that is held every other Tuesday evening.
We also expect to provide some special events other than
the regular activities for the youth such as
participation in the Halloween parade, a carnival and a
talent show in the spring. Now that summer is nearly
over, we're looking forward to the fall and winter
activities and the excitement that the children and
youth bring to the center.
Our mission statement is as follows: "LUMINA is a
Community Center which offers the light of faith, hope
and love "to", "for", and "with" the children, youth and
families of Mifflin County in the name of Christ." Thank
you so very much for helping us to fulfill our very
important mission statement within our community and for
your support. Please keep the staff, volunteers and
children/youth of the center in your prayers.
Sincerely,
Deborah A. Wilt LUMINA Director

Dear Lewistown Presbyterian Church,
On behalf of the Joint Camp and Conference Committee
of Krislund Camp and Conference Center, I am writing to
express our deep gratitude for your generous commitment
to the Funding the Future Campaign. Our records indicate
that you have made a pledge of $25.000, Your gift of
$2500 made toward your pledge is deeply appreciated.
For more than forty years people - especially youth
and children - have made their way to Krislund's wide
expands of green, its woods, streams, and trails. As we
work earnestly to complete the last 4 recommendations
from our master plan that will include constructing an
adult-friendly lodge, improving the upper lodge,
significantly reducing our land debt, and building an
OMNI (all-purpose) facility, your commitment urges us
onward.
Funding the Future is an outward sign of our pledge
to continuously reach people of ALL ages with God's Good
News and create an environment that enables people to
clarify and strengthen their faith or even come to faith
in Jesus Christ. It is our desire to keep youth,
ministry and Christian education experiences as our
primary focus. We also hope to further assist the local
community and region with helpful facilities and
Christian hospitality.
Thank you again for your role in Funding the Future.
